The research behind the books

Before we drew anything, we went looking for what the research actually says about coloring. About fifty peer-reviewed sources were located, read, and graded. This page is the honest summary — including the parts that did not go our way.

How we grade evidence

Not all findings are equal, so we label them. Strong means randomized or controlled designs, or meta-analyses in reputable journals, replicated. Moderate means good single studies, quasi-experiments, or solid long-term correlational work. Weak means small pilots or uncontrolled designs. Not supported means a widely repeated claim that the literature contradicts or cannot verify.

Where the evidence is about drawing or handwriting in general rather than coloring specifically, we call it adjacent — relevant, but a claim built on it has to be worded accordingly. That distinction does most of the work on this page.

Three things the research settles

1. Coloring calms. This one is solid.

Evidence: strongA short stretch of coloring — five to thirty minutes — reliably lowers anxiety in the moment compared with doing nothing. It has been shown in randomized studies of children before tests, of teenagers, of university students, of emergency-department patients, of children in hospital, and of older adults. Different countries, different researchers, same direction. This is the single most defensible thing a coloring book publisher can say.

A calming screen-free activity — studies show a few minutes of coloring can ease test-day jitters and everyday anxiety.

One trial is worth picturing. In a study of children having an IV line placed, the group who colored through it reported pain of about 3 out of 10; the group who did not reported about 7. Anxiety scores moved the same way. Coloring is not magic — in one three-arm trial Lego play beat it — but it is a genuinely effective way to be absorbed in something else.

Evidence: moderateThe mechanism matters for design: the benefit comes from absorption, not from venting feelings. Children asked to draw a house recovered their mood better than children asked to draw the thing that upset them, and imaginary content worked as well as real content. Anything absorbing enough to get lost in does the job.

2. The fine-motor story is strong — and indirect.

Evidence: strongTwo things are well established. Fine motor skill and visual-motor integration at school entry predict later achievement, especially in maths, across six long-term datasets and a 2024 meta-analysis. And a child's coloring output is a valid window on that same visual-motor development — researchers have scored it reliably, and a 2025 study of 505 preschoolers predicted developmental status from photographs of children's coloring with about 80% accuracy.

Here is the honest gap in the middle. No rigorous trial has shown that coloring causes those later academic gains. The skills predict school readiness; coloring exercises the skills. That is a real claim, and it is the only version of it we will make.

3. Two popular beliefs fail — in opposite directions.

Not supportedMandalas are not special. A 2022 meta-analysis pooling eight studies and 578 people found mandala coloring is no better than free drawing for anxiety, and the bigger effects clustered in the weaker studies. The founding experiment in this literature found mandalas and plaid patterns performed the same. Structured, complex and absorbing is what matters.

Not supportedColoring books are not stifling your child. That warning traces to a 1947 book of expert opinion, not to an experiment. The one direct study in children — 64 kids, 1981 — found the opposite direction: children who colored a model picture then produced more varied and unusual drawings. Longer-term work in classrooms finds that guided drawing instruction and inventive drawing grow together, not at each other's expense.

The fair version of the old objection is about opportunity cost: coloring should not be a child's only art activity. A book with open-ended drawing space answers that directly, which is why ours have it.

What this looks like on the page

  • Lines that change across the book. Mature crayon grips rise from roughly half of children at three to about nine in ten by six. Our line weight steps down across a book to meet that curve.
  • A mix, not just fill-in. Trace a wave, copy a shell into an empty box, draw a creature nobody has drawn before.
  • Pre-writing strokes disguised as art. Waves, loops, zig-zags and circles are the shapes a hand needs before it needs letters.
  • Open space on purpose. Every book ends with a blank frame.
  • No grip-shaming and no scoring. We never tell a child to stay inside the lines. Research on grasp found that grip pattern did not affect handwriting speed or legibility anyway.
  • Age-correct expectations. Scribbling is a normed milestone at about 18 months. Asking a two-year-old to color inside a line is asking for something the research says is not there yet.

By age

Ages 1–3: the scribbling years

The honest headline is that no peer-reviewed study has tested coloring outcomes in toddlers at all. What the literature covers at this age is scribbling — and scribbling is richer than it looks. It is a normed developmental milestone, it shows early intention and meaning-making, and its progression tracks growth in memory and self-control. What it is not is coloring inside lines.

Ages 3–5: where coloring earns its keep

This is the band with the best coloring-specific science, and it is where our first book sits. Grip matures on a documented timetable between three and six. Coloring output reflects visual-motor development well enough to be scored by researchers. And this kind of work is most of what early classrooms actually do — one study observed kindergarteners spending nearly half their class time on fine-motor activities. A book at the kitchen table rehearses the same motions.

Ages 6–12: calm and coping

For older children the strong evidence swings back to calm. Coloring before a test lowered children's test anxiety in randomized studies, with structured and free coloring both working. In hospitals, coloring during procedures reduced reported pain and fear. Left to themselves, children choose absorbing content over expressive content when they want to feel better — and it works.

What we are careful about

The coloring literature has real limits and we would rather say them out loud. Many studies use small convenience samples. Most measure how someone feels immediately afterwards, not weeks later. Almost all of the school-readiness evidence is correlational — it shows which children do well later, not that an activity made them do well.
